Composted tobacco waste increases the yield and organoleptic quality of leaf mustard

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) waste is produced in many countries and phytotoxic due to the alkaloid content; Vietnam usually burned causing air pollution. We composted tobacco with chicken manure different proportions—1 t of ± accelerant (C1 C2); 0.8 + 0.2 (C3 C4); 0.7 0.3 (C5 C6)—for 30 d covered heaps. Three mixtures containing (C2, C4, C6) reached temperatures ∼55 °C, that 5s, hot enough suppress disease weeds. Composting decreased content from ∼6,000 ∼200 mg kg−1, C4 a C/N ratio 19:1, was used field trial. The compost treatments (0, 10, 15, 20 ha−1) were combined fertilizer phosphorus (40 kg ha−1), nitrogen (60 potassium (90 for leaf mustard (Brassica integrifolia). yield increased ∼17 ∼29 ha−1 amount applied, nitrate concentration concomitantly ∼67 ∼42 NO3–N kg−1 fresh weight, presumably ongoing composting (nitrogen drawdown). Organoleptic evaluation showed preference crops grown amendments. Whether remains be seen whether one-off applications >20 repeated, large provide additional, long-term production benefits, or if benefits may outweighed by accumulation persistent, alkaloids.
